Artificial Intelligence Timeline Infographic – From Eliza to Tay and beyond

Do you know your Eliza from your Tay, and the other A.I. heroes and villains from sixty years of Artificial Intelligence? Well, here’s an updated and downloadable A.I. timeline infographic to refresh your memory (high-resolution PDF JPG). It’s taken from our upcoming SYZYGY international survey Public Perceptions of Artificial Intelligence: What Marketers Need to Know to be released on October 6 (let me know if you’re interested in a copy).

We’re surveying 6000 people across Europe and the USA to understand how people feel about A.I. today. The goal of the study is to help marketers, whether marketing A.I. or marketing with A.I., become more empathetic to people’s hopes, fears and meanings around this emerging technology.

  • 1950 TURING TEST Computer scientist Alan Turing proposes a test for machine intelligence. If a machine can trick humans into thinking it is human, then it has intelligence
  • 1955 A.I. BORN Term ‘artificial intelligence’ is coined by computer scientist, John McCarthy to describe “the science and engineering of making intelligent machines”
  • 1961 UNIMATE First industrial robot, Unimate, goes to work at GM replacing humans on the assembly line
  • 1964 ELIZA Pioneering chatbot developed by Joseph Weizenbaum at MIT holds conversations with humans
  • 1966 SHAKEY The ‘first electronic person’ from Stanford, Shakey is a general-purpose mobile robot reasons about its own actions
  • 1997 DEEP BLUE Deep Blue, a chess-playing computer from IBM defeats world chess champion, Garry Kasparov
  • 1998 KISMET Cynthia Breazeal at MIT introduces KISmet, an emotionally intelligent robot insofar as it detects and responds to people’s feelings
  • 1999 AIBO Sony launches first consumer robot pet dog AiBO (AI robot) with skills and personality that develop over time
  • 2002 ROOMBA First mass produced autonomous robotic vacuum cleaner from iRobot learns to navigate and clean homes
  • 2011 SIRI Apple integrates Siri, an intelligent virtual assistant with a voice interface, into the iPhone 4S
  • 2011 WATSON IBM’s question answering computer Watson wins first place on popular $1M prize television quiz show Jeopardy
  • 2014 EUGENE Eugene Goostman, a chatbot passes the Turing Test with a third of judges believing Eugene is human
  • 2014 ALEXA Amazon launches Alexa, an intelligent virtual assistant with a voice interface that can complete shopping tasks
  • 2016 TAY Microsoft’s chatbot Tay goes rogue on social media making inflammatory and offensive racist comments

    • According to founded research artificial intelligence have become independent intelligence before the human race existed. Loads of the research was agreed by various groups of experts not to publish because it is being conducted for certain reasons. The technology have answered all the questions. Humans can live forever and there is unlimited land with current technology.

  • Lovley timeline. What kind of copyright is this under? Can it be used in a presentation given accreditation + link to #digitalwellbeeing?

  • Hi Paul,
Thank you for all your great articles. I am doing a research about AI and would love to have a copy of your international survey Public Perceptions of Artificial Intelligence: What Marketers Need to Know?

Would you be able to send it to my email please?

    Thanks so much

    • Good afternoon, I’m Bilal Abubakar I study B.A English language and linguistics. From the university of sokoto state Nigeria.. I have interest to study artificial intelligence after my B.A. English language and linguistics. But I have no idea if it’s possible ?

      • You don’t need a degree for ai. There are many groups and associations in the African continent that is heavily involve in hardware and software to a very advance level. But a degree will be useful for many certification applications such as the aspect of precision, health and safety such as a medical or engineering requirements.

      • You may require subjects such as mathematics 1 for university entry.
Some university require a few certificates in IT of a Diploma of IT.
A.I. require the use of C+ software. C+ software is basically algorithm or mathematics language.

  • AI is rapidly evolving, which is one reason why a career in AI offers so much potential. As technology evolves, learning improves. Van Loon described the three stages of AI and machine learning development as follow:

  • In addition to the development of machine learning that leads to new capabilities, we have subsets within the domain of machine learning, each of which offers a potential area of specialization for those interested in a career in AI.

  • Deep learning is at the cutting-edge of intelligent automation. It focuses on machine learning tools and deploying them to solve problems by making decisions. With deep learning, data is processed through neural networks, getting closer to how we think as humans. Deep learning can be applied to images, text, and speech to draw conclusions that mimic human decision making.

  • If you’re intrigued by this career field and wondering how to get started, Van Loon described the learning paths for three different types of professionals; those new to the field, programmers, and those already working in data science. He also points out that various industries require different skill sets, but all working in AI should have excellent communication skills before addressing the math and computing skills needed.

  • It might be easier to state what part of our modern society artificial intelligence (AI) hasn’t touched to show how important it is to our daily lives, business operations and society. Intelligence machines are influencing nearly every facet of our lives to help improve efficiencies and augment our human capabilities. AI is so intertwined in all that we do; it’s hard to imagine living life without it.

  • According to founded research by certain experts that have not been published and join agreement not to publish for many reasons.
